Out of the eighteen suspects arrested in connection with the
gruesome murder of four UNIPORT students , at Umuokiri village in Aluu
community in Ikwerre LGA of Rivers State, last year, 7 of them were freed by a Port
Harcourt Magistrate court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Woke.
The suspects
were remanded in prison custody on October 18, 2012 when they appeared
before the court. The seven suspects were freed by the Court in compliance with the legal advice by the State Director of
Public Prosecution (DPP), who absolved them of any involvement in the
killings and directed that they be discharged.
They are Cynthia Chinwo, George Nwadei, Daniel Ekpe, Gabriel Ochie, Endurance Edet, Lucky Agburum and Finebone Jeffrey.
Jeffrey, a 300 Level Theatre Art student of UNIPORT, who was in tears, thanked God for vindicating him. He said he was arrested in the examination hall.
“I just thank God for vindicating me, I never knew I will come out of this trouble.
“God knows that I am innocent and my colleagues also know that I am innocent.”
The legal
advice dated January 25 and read in court by the Chief Magistrate,
Emmanuel Woke, said: “No prima facia case of murder contrary to Section
319(1) of the Criminal Code has been disclosed against them and
as such the charge against them should be dropped and they be released
forthwith.
They were suspects who were arrested based on mere suspicion by police".
The remaining 11 suspects including the traditional ruler of Umuokiri
Aluu community, Alhaji Hassan Welewa are still facing murder charges
for their involvement in the killing of the students.
Thank God Justice is taking its course!
