Aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were
engaged in series of confrontation yesterday, pointing accusing fingers
at one another for being responsible for the ongoing squabble in the
party. At the end, they agreed that the future of the party was now in
the hands of the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
Since the NGF election disagreement, where two factional fora were
formed, yesterday meeting was the first where the two factions met under
one roof. The meeting which held at the banquet hall of the
Presidential Villa, Abuja, saw former President, Olusegun Obasanjo as
the mediator.
President Goodluck Jonathan was unavoidably absent from the meeting,
but however had a brief talk with the party leadership before the
meeting started.
It was disclosed that Obasanjo and the governors would be having
another extensive meeting with the President thereafter, where the
various issues discussed in the second round of the meeting at press
time yesterday, will be ironed out in what has been termed final
reconciliation.
There were indications that the two disagreed NGF Chairmen may step
down for peace to reign in the party. This were part of the suggestions
made for reconciliation to become effective.
The meeting which ended at about 3.00 a.m. yesterday, resolved that
President Obasanjo will lead a delegation to President Jonathan and
First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to emphasise on the need for the
First Lady to be careful with the affairs of Rivers states.
The governors also expressed their pains over Obasanjo’s attitude
towards the affairs of the party as they accused him of abandoning the
party at its most troubling time.
